Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo Trek is a remote, camping-based circuit trek in Nepal’s far-western Dolpo region, crossing high passes including Numa-La and Baga-La, visiting Phoksundo Lake, and passing through ancient Bon and Tibetan Buddhist villages near the Tibetan border.

What Is the Lower Dolpo Trek?

The Lower Dolpo Trek is a restricted-area circuit trek in Nepal’s Dolpo district that combines camping with occasional homestay and local teahouse stops. It crosses two high passes, Numa-La and Baga-La, while exploring remote Bon and Tibetan Buddhist villages, Phoksundo Lake, and the wild landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Lower Dolpo trek route is a relatively less touristic, offbeat track in the shadow of the High Himalaya Mt. Dhaulagiri and the lap of the Kanjiroba Mountain. Numa-La and Baga-La Passes

The two high passes — Numa-La and Baga-La — are the defining physical challenge of the Lower Dolpo circuit and among the most dramatic viewpoints on any trek in western Nepal. Both passes sit above 5,000m, offering wide panoramas across the Dolpo wilderness toward the Kanjiroba Himal and Dhaulagiri range. The crossing between the two passes takes trekkers through some of the region’s most remote terrain, well away from any established teahouse network, which is why camping gear and a full support crew are standard for this route.

Culture, Wildlife and Biodiversity

Dolpo’s remoteness has helped preserve one of the most intact ecosystems in the Himalaya. Trekkers on the Lower Dolpo circuit regularly encounter blue sheep, Himalayan wolves, and occasionally the elusive snow leopard in the high-altitude zones between passes. The forests and valleys below support red pandas, musk deer, and a wide range of Himalayan birdlife.

Culturally, the region’s Bon monasteries and shrines are some of the most significant in Nepal — the Bon tradition predates Tibetan Buddhism and survives here in a more complete form than almost anywhere else outside Tibet. The circuit’s side trips to monasteries, temples, and Bonpo shrines alongside Upper Dolpo Trekking routes give trekkers access to a living cultural heritage that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The Yarchagumba (Cordyceps sinensis) — a medicinal fungus that grows from the head of a caterpillar larva — is one of the more unusual features of the local economy in this part of Dolpo, and its high commercial value has made it an important seasonal livelihood for many Dolpali families.
