This offbeat trekking in Nepal winds through trails beside the Myagdi River and comes across habitats of ethical mountain tribes frequently. The Dhaulagiri Trek is a demanding circuit route in Nepal’s western Himalaya that circles Mt. Dhaulagiri, the world’s 7th-highest mountain, passing through Italian and Japanese Base Camps, Hidden Valley, and over Dhampus Peak before descending to Jomsom.
Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek starts from the sub-tropical woodlands, where the leeches could trouble trekkers a bit. As the trek goes to a higher elevation, we now witness the low alpine forest. Eventually, going even higher, we will enter the treeless regions.
Trekkers traverse through Italian Base Camp and Japanese Base Camp to Dhaulagiri Base Camp, where they can literally touch the mountains. Moreover, hiking along the rock-strewn trails to French Col, a 5,000m-plus pass, before entering Hidden Valley. Hidden Valley is a fascinating highlight of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek. Hidden Pass is probably the most beautiful pass in Nepal.
Explore a day around Hidden Valley before scaling Dhampus Peak. After the summit of Dhampus Peak, which is technically an easy climb. Then traverse down to Jomsom via Dhampus Pass.
The views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Dhampus Peak, and Nilgiri, among others, are the great Himalayan panorama of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, which is also popular as the Hidden Valley Trek.

The Dhaulagiri Trek is consistently ranked among Nepal’s toughest circuit routes.
Because the trail combines remote camping sections with a genuine peak ascent, this route is generally recommended for experienced trekkers rather than a first Himalayan trek. Those looking for a similarly wild but slightly less demanding alternative may want to consider the Annapurna Circuit Trek, which shares some of the same Kali Gandaki valley terrain.
As a restricted and challenging route, the Dhaulagiri Circuit requires a special trekking permit issued through a registered trekking agency, alongside standard national park entry fees for the areas the route passes through.
The best time to visit Dhaulagiri Circuit is during September – November and March – May.
