Situated on the Tibetan Plateau, this region is surrounded by the Himalayas to the south and the Kunlun Mountains to the north. Tibet shares its border with Indian, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar, making it a popular place to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.   

How to Travel Tibet 

To travel to Tibet, you must join a registered travel agency, as solo traveling is not allowed. You will be required valid passport, a Chinese Visa, and a special Tibet Travel Permit, which must be arranged in advance through a tour operator. 

Entering Tibet from Nepal

Ycan can enter Tibet from Nepal by taking a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa or by driving overland via the Gyirong Border Town. However, to enter Tibet from Nepal, you must need to obtain the Chinese Group Visa, which must be applied for through a registered agency in Kathmandu. 

Direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa

Taking a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to enter Tibet. You take a flight from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, which takes about 1.5 hours to reach. Most of the travelers choose this option as they can easily reach Tibet. 

Overland Tour to Tibet from Kathmandu 

Overland tour to Tibet from Kathmandu is a perfect choice for travelers who want to explore the beauty of the Tibetan landscapes and make the most of their travel with full of memories. The process includes a road trip from Kathmandu to the Gyirong Border Town, then local Tibetan vehicles travel for the further journey to Lhasa. The drive from Gyirong Border to Lhasa takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. 

Travel Requirements for Tibet

To make your travel to Tibet, certain requirements must be completed to make your journey smooth and comfortable. Below are some of the necessary travel requirements for Tibet that must be met to make your travel to Tibet. 

  • You must be engaged with a registered tour agency, as an independent traveler to Tibet is not allowed. 
  • Travelers must need to obtain a Chinese Visa, which must be secured before their travel. 
  • Travelers’ passports should have at least 6 months’ validity. 
  • You must complete all the application forms and a passport-sized photo. 
  • Use the same passport for your travel to both Nepal and Tibet, as it will be stamped with the Nepalese visa and linked to the group visa application.
