The majestic Potala Palace, the monasteries of the Gelugpa sect like Deprung, Sera, and Ganden, the summer palace of the great Dalai Lama, Norbulingka, and the Barkhor Square at the center of the town are the biggest highlights in Lhasa. While exploring Lhasa, it is great to observe the typical Buddhist culture at its best.

The Architectural Marvel of the Potala Palace

Rising dramatically over the Lhasa Valley, the Potala Palace is the definitive icon of Tibet. This multi-layered winter palace, with over a thousand rooms, serves as a repository of centuries of Tibetan history, sacred art, and spiritual lineage. Walking up the stone steps, visitors immediately feel the thin, crisp air balanced by the intense fragrance of yak-butter lamps and incense. Inside, the intricate murals, jewel-encrusted stupas of past Dalai Lamas, and historic scriptures tell the story of a civilization that prioritized the spirit above all else.

The Great Monasteries of the Gelugpa Sect

Lhasa is also home to the intellectual and spiritual powerhouses of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism:

• Drepung Monastery: Once the largest monastery in the world, housing up to 10,000 monks, it sits at the foot of Mount Gambo Utse. Its sprawling white complexes resemble a heap of rice, which is what its name translates to.
• Sera Monastery: Famous worldwide for its lively afternoon monk debates. In the courtyard, monks gather daily to debate Buddhist philosophy using animated hand gestures, claps, and verbal exchanges to test each other’s knowledge.
• Ganden Monastery: Positioned further outside Lhasa on the Wangbur Mountain, it offers breathtaking amphitheater-like views of the surrounding valleys and serves as the historic cradle of the Gelugpa administrative line.

Norbulingka and the Vibrant Kora of Barkhor Square

Away from the monastic austerity lies Norbulingka, the lush summer palace filled with manicured gardens, pavilions, and historical quarters. Meanwhile, the heartbeat of secular and spiritual life meets at Barkhor Square. Encircling the sacred Jokhang Temple, this historic circuit is filled with pilgrims performing clockwise koras (prayer circuits), spinning handheld prayer wheels, and prostrating on the smooth flagstones alongside vibrant local markets selling Tibetan handicrafts, turquoise jewelry, and traditional garments.

Beyond Lhasa: Yamdrok Tso, Gyantse, and Shigatse

Our cultural tour of Tibet also goes beyond Lhasa; we drive across high passes, savor the enchanting views of Yamdrok Tso Lake, explore Tibet’s two greatest towns after Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse, and, of course, drive to the Base Camp of Everest and the Rongbuk Monastery at 5000m.

Savoring the Sacred Waters of Yamdrok Tso

Leaving Lhasa behind, the journey transitions into the wild, rugged expanses of the Tibetan landscape. Crossing the high Kamba La Pass (4,794m), travelers are treated to a sudden, jaw-dropping view of Yamdrok Tso Lake. Shaped like a scorpion, this coiling body of water features a brilliant, shifting turquoise hue that contrasts sharply with the arid, snow-dusted mountains surrounding it. For Tibetans, the lake is deeply sacred, believed to be the transformation of a goddess.

Discovering Gyantse and Shigatse

As the overland journey unfolds, you enter Gyantse, a town that beautifully preserves its traditional identity. Here, the primary highlight is the Gyantse Kumbum, a magnificent multi-tiered structural stupa containing dozens of small chapels filled with thousands of unique wall paintings.
From Gyantse, the route leads to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. Shigatse is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and hosts the massive Tashilhunpo Monastery. Navigating the golden-roofed buildings of Tashilhunpo reveals the spectacular 26-meter-high statue of the Future Buddha (Maitreya), heavily adorned with gold leaves and precious gems.

Journey to Everest Base Camp

The final crescendo of the overland journey pushes deep into the high Himalayas toward the legendary North Face of Mount Everest. Driving across the spectacular Gyawu La Pass, you catch sweeping, panoramic views of five peaks above 8,000 meters, including Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest itself.
Arriving at Rongbuk Monastery at 5,000 meters provides a stark, humbling perspective. As the highest monastery in the world, it sits directly in the shadow of Everest’s monumental northern wall. Watching the sunset cast a golden glow across the sheer rock face of the world’s tallest peak is a sight that words can rarely do justice.
