What exactly is the trekking permit in Nepal

Trekking permits are a type of special permit that is important to obtain before starting your trekking journey in Nepal. Reaching each region and spot of Nepal requires trekkers and travelers to obtain the necessary permits for a hassle-free experience. 

Most of the permits are obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu, Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), or the Immigration Department of Nepal. When travelers and trekkers from around the world want to trek certain regions of Nepal, they need to obtain permits like the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card, Conservation Area Permit, Local Area Permit, and even the Restricted Area Permit if they travel to the restricted regions. 

Is it necessary for travelers to obtain trekking permits in Nepal?

Yes, if you are a foreign trekker, obtaining all the necessary permits as well as valid documents is mandatory for al the trekking areas of Nepal including the Restrected  Trek area. Having all the required permits can help you make your journey even more comfortable with experiences that are beyond your imagination. During your journey, there are most of checkpoints, where you need to present your trekking permits. 

Travel Insurance is most Necessary to proceed Restrected ara Trekking Permit in Nepal

According the government policy, every trekkers need to submit their travel insurrance (must cover emmergancy evecuation and medical coverages in the himlaayas) to ensure the safety of trekkers.

Each region in Nepal needs to have different permits to be obtained, as well as varied costs. Below are the necessary trekking permits and cost details required for each region.

  • USD 100 per week (Sep – Nov)
  • USD 75 per week (Dec – Aug)
 6. Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit
  • USD 500 for the first 10 Days 
  • USD 50 per day after the first 10 Days
 7. Lower Dolpo Trek
  • USD 20 per week 
  • USD 5 per week after 1 we
 8. Upper Mustang Trek
  • USD 500 per person (first 10 days)
  • USD 50 per person (per day after 10 days)
 9. Manang (Nar Phu Valley Trek)
  • USD 100 per person for 1 week. (Sep – Nov) and USD 15 per person beyond 1 week. 
  • USD 75 per person for 1 week (Dec – August) and USD 15 per person beyond 1 week
 10. Tsum Valley Trek 
  • USD 40 per person for 1 week and USD 7 per person beyond 1 week. (Sep – Nov) 
  • USD 30 per person for 1 week and USD 7 beyond 1 week. (Dec – Aug)

  1. To get trekking permit an application form with other relevant documents should be submitted through any registered trekking agency of Nepal.
  2. The trekking permit fee must be paid in US Dollar: Notwithstanding anything written above.
