What Is the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT)?

The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) in Nepal is a long-distance hiking route running the length of the country’s Himalayas, from Mt. Kanchenjunga in the east to Hilsa on the Humla border in the far west — the gateway to the Mount Kailash Trek. GHT stabilized in 2010 for about 1,700 km long adventure hiking routes in the Himalayas’ periphery. The Great Himalaya Trail begins from the eastern Nepal border near Mt. Kanchenjunga.

Upper vs. Lower Great Himalaya Trail Routes

There are two routes: the upper and lower Great Himalaya Trail.

  • Upper Great Himalaya Trail begins from Ilam–Taplejung, 1,820 m, and is covered with many high-altitude Himalaya passes, including Sherpini Col – 6,146 m, following the footsteps of the Tenzing-Hillary trail from the Everest region trekking trail, through valleys and the wildest hidden ethnic villages.
  • Lower Great Himalaya Trail begins from Tharpu – 1,300 m above sea level- and follows ancient villages, river valleys, green forest, and lower Himalayan range terrain, ending at the remote urban villages on the far-west Tibetan border at Hilsa, 3,700 m.

Landscapes, Wildlife, and Culture Along the GHT

The route offers unbelievably diverse landscapes, flora and fauna, and the chance to learn and experience local commune culture and tradition. The Great Himalaya range is home to snow leopards, red pandas, and other wildlife, with vegetation running from subtropical to alpine zone forest.

Trekking Regions Covered by the GHT

This trail includes most of Nepal’s Himalaya trekking routes, linking together the region’s best-known walks into a single continuous corridor:
